A growing community of gamers is excited about new achievements for the classic game Descent 1 on PSX. Recently accepted as a junior developer, one player aims to create unique challenges that could spark renewed interest in achievement hunting among fans.
For those unfamiliar, RetroAchievements allows gamers to earn player-created achievements for classic games pre-dating the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii. This initiative has gained traction among veteran players who cherish nostalgia while diving into the challenge of crafting new gameplay experiences.
The developer of Descent 1 posted on forums seeking input from the community on potential achievements. The desire to engage with fans is strong, as they noted, "I was hoping I'd get help from this community and maybe even get more people interested in achievement hunting."
Player feedback revealed a mix of excitement and suggestions for achievements. Several ideas were tossed around:
Collect all secret doors/areas
Complete each level using only one weapon
Clear all bot generation centers
One player humorously suggested an achievement for dying immediately after a driller screams, saying, "Need an achievement for getting killed less than a second after a driller screams at you."
Interestingly, while some ideas spark enthusiasm, others raised concerns about their practicality. "Collecting all static power-ups can be tedious," noted another fan. "Clearing a level without destroying a specific robot class may not be feasible."
This development could open doors for future projects. If successful, the junior developer plans to tackle Descent 2 and Descent: Maximum next. However, challenges remain, especially regarding achievement validity for DOS versions. Some community members believe itโs possible to include these titles too, stating, "It may not be impossible to add Descent's DOS/PC versions."
"Only use one weapon through the whole level can add a challenging twist to the gameplay!" โ Community Member
Concerns about increasing playthrough requirements were also voiced, as one player cautioned against making multiple playthroughs mandatory for achievement completion. The sentiment around achieving mastery varies, with some embracing the challenge and others longing for a more balanced approach.
